Chef Position Now Available
Position available for a working chef in a fast casual family run brewpub in the San Juan Islands. Year round position, large menu, hustle bustle summers! Emphasis on in-house preparation, innovative specials, and consistency in menu and staff training. Relocation is required. Fifteen years in this location, a unique opportunity for the right person.
Here’s what we’d really say if we were talking face to face:
Peggy & I (Oren) have run our restaurant/brewery for 15 years. We have been lucky to have great staff, and we are sad to see our Chef Matt head back Down-Sound. He has been a great asset to the pub, and he will be sorely missed. We need to replace him. Peggy & I cannot feasibly run the front end, the office, the brewery (that’s the other story) the kitchen, the PR, etc, etc, at the same time. We are seeking someone who can fit into our family. This individual may be fully experienced, or just launching a career. There are benefits for us either way. We like our menu, but we also enjoy tweaking it as well. Our philosophy is somewhat eclectic. Some of our menu items are just good pub standbys, nachos, chicken tenders, pizzas, & good quality ingredient burgers. The rest of our menu is a reflection of countless years of being foodies, our families & our restaurant heritage continue to inspire it. We still cook our own corned beef & roast beef. We bread our own oysters and make Shepherd’s Pie from scratch. (We’re proud that the oysters & Shepherds were both written up favorably in The New York Times!) We serve innovative specials. Many of our local customers eat here 100 times plus a year! We need someone who accepts & fits into that formula.

Brewer Position Available
Our brewer Mike has moved on to new challenges. After working his way out of our kitchen, Mike took on brewing whole heartedly. He has been our brewer for six seasons. We will be at a loss to replace him, not just for his brewing abilities, but he is now part of our family. Mike has worked every position in the restaurant, he volunteered with us (we raise/ or donate to raise/ or help to raise $50,000 plus a year in our local community), did kitchen shifts when ever needed, covered us when we went away, he always jumped in as the responsible guy we knew he was. (Go ahead, Mike, use this as a reference!)
Our brewery is an anomaly. All of it is at least 15 years old, most of it is 30-50 years old. We brew lagers, ales, Hefe-weizens and Belgians, in tight quarters, in retail space, with some of the most expensive shipping & utility rates in the state. We sell 70% of our beer in the 4-5 months of our tourist season. Our poor brewer works too hard in the summer, then we have to find him other chores all winter just to keep him fed.
This could be a great opportunity for someone just entering the brewing field. (I have babied the brewery since batch number 1, having gone up to 2 year stints as my own brewer through the years) Here is an opportunity to learn the ropes, without being left so horribly alone! For someone with more experience, here also is the opportunity to work in an operation small enough to get one out of the brewery, and involved with other aspects of the operation.
We will post the brewer position late March/Early April 2008. We would wish to fill the position by May 1st.

Volunteer with us! A group of friends and frequenter's of the brew pub get together for social events and also volunteer for local causes. Here Ale House friends help out at the San Juan Island Oktoberfest, held the first Saturday of each October. The group is affectionately labeled PUB SCUM! The name started as a joke amongst ourselves, and it stuck! How do you join Pub Scum? We aren't quite sure, but it seems if you hang out with us, it happens. We play trivia together, watch movies, go bowling on the mainland, just have fun!
